About our Council:
It is truly a Blessing that our humble St. Jude Council celbrated its 101st Anniversary! While there are currently over 12,000 Knights of Columbus councils in the world, the four pillars of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism set by Father Michael J. McGivney continue to stand strong within our Council after one hundred and one years!
Elkhart Council No. 1043 was organized on October 15, 1905 when a large class was initiated at a session in the Odd Fellows Temple.
This was twenty-three years after the founding of the Order in New Haven, Connecticut, on May 15, 1882, and six years after the first council was organized in Indiana. Indiana’s first council was started in Indianapolis on June 25, 1899 with thirty seven charter members.
The pioneer members of Elkhart Council were Charles D. Dolan who had received his degree while a resident of Lansing, Michigan, Charles H. Maloney of Jackson, Michigan Council; and John P. McGee of Indianapolis Council. These men along with a number of Elkhartans who had become members of South Bend Council and others who had been initiated in various other councils formed the nucleus of the new organization.
Charter members were:
